Yajna is the heart of Vedic Dharma. This is a science of Rishis. Rishis have invented the procedure of Yajna. They invented it for the betterment of humanity. This is a system being followed since the Vedic era. It is the vital element of the Vedic culture; it is the essence of Vedic culture indeed. Yajna brings out the sense of surrender, a sense of sacrifice, and a willingness to bring down the inflated ego. It also inspires for building a spiritual life.
Our old treaties describe different types of yajnas viz. Putreshthi, Ashwamedh, Gomedh, Rajsuya and so on. Upanishads and Puranas are full of discussion on Yajna. During the Treta Yuga, the highly esteemed king Dashrath sought the blessings of the great sage Maharshi Shringi for performing the Putreshthi Yajna. Lord Krishna himself used to perform dainik-agnihotra.
